Shadows

objects (treated digital print, fluorescent tube, plexiglass), 2025

The series draws on archival photographs, placing them in new contexts. What do we actually see when we look at a photograph? I “fish out” views and words, arranging them into varied configurations. In this way I change our contact with objects – and with language. Things appear by way of a sequence of images and words.

Shadows I
The quoted photograph was taken during Lady Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence’s speech in Trafalgar Square, London, in 1908.

Shadows II,
The quoted photograph was taken in Hadleigh, Suffolk, England, in 1905.

Shadows III,
The quoted photograph was taken in the United States in 1917. It shows
the draft lottery that determined which conscripts would be sent to the front. The text is made up of phrases drawn at random from Samuel Beckett’s work “what is the word”.

Shadows IV,
The quoted photograph was taken by Lewis Hine in North Pownal, Vermont, United States, in 1910.
